At the end of last year when I got the Entertainer app, I realized it would be exactly what I needed to get to know Cape Town. As a former Eastern Cape girl who was taking on the Mother City, the list of restaurant choices was both endless and overwhelming. So I decided to use the Entertainer app as a guide – a great way to try places I hadn’t yet heard of or been to. When I started mentioning to people that I was on somewhat of a “restaurant hunt” a few mentioned Jonkershuis. So one warm summers afternoon we decided to have a late lunch at Jonkershuis Constantia and wow, we were impressed.
Jonkershuis Constantia is nestled in the historic Groot Constantia Wine Estate. The estate has been around since 1685 and boasts a cellar as well the Iziko Groot Constantia manor house museum which you can view at an additional cost. Alternatively, you can just relax and go for a stroll around the grounds. The estate just has the majestic views over the valley. If you like wine, they have a fabulous wine tasting too.
Jonkershuis eatery really tries to reflect the rich Cape Malay heritage of their ‘home’ and this really comes through in the menu. Guests can choose to sit outside at long tables under umbrellas, or inside where there is also a fireplace for chilly evenings. The bistro style food is very Cape Malay inspired. Additionally, their chefs source fresh & sustainable produce daily and they support organic, free range & sustainable practices wherever possible.
For my meal I was torn between the pork belly and the oven baked bobotie, because it’s one of my favorite meals ever. Eventually I decided to go for the bobotie due to the waitress’s recommendation. Let’s just say I didn’t regret my choice at all. It was so frikkin delicious, this amazing combination of flavours and textures. The portion was also incredibly large (I couldn’t finish it!)
Other meals that look delicious are the ribeye steak, karoo lamb malay curry and the spinach and ricotta ravioli.
I used the Entertainer App so we got our meals 2 for 1. However, if you were paying full price it would be R128 for the bobotie, and hubby had a creamy bacon pasta which was also R128.
They also have the most delicious looking desserts and all of them are less than R70.
The service was also incredible, friendly staff and the food took about twenty minutes. We ended the afternoon with a stroll about the grounds which was just too stunning. Cape Town guys and gals, you should definately put Jonkershuis Constantia on your list of places to try.
If you’re wondering about the Entertainer and what that’s all about, why not check out my article all about it. It’s really economical and includes activities too!
Looking forward to keeping you updated with some more of my Entertainer activities.
